How to use LiveLingo

From install to subtitles in about 5 minutes. Here's exactly what to do.

Step 1
Install LiveLingo

Download and install LiveLingo in Chrome. It's free and takes about 2 minutes. Head to the download page and follow the instructions there.

Important: After installing, refresh any tab you want to use LiveLingo on. You only need to do this once per tab — the extension loads into it automatically after that.

Step 2
Get your free access key

LiveLingo needs a free access key to power the speech recognition. This is a one-time setup that takes about 2 minutes — and it's completely free.

See the guide below for exact step-by-step instructions. Once you've pasted the key into LiveLingo, it saves automatically and you never need to do it again.

Why do I need this? LiveLingo uses a third-party service to convert speech to text in real time. The free access key lets you use that service directly — no cost to you, no limits that affect everyday use.

Open a video and start

Go to any video — YouTube, Netflix, a lecture, anything. Click the LiveLingo icon, pick your languages, and click Start.

A screen sharing dialog will appear. Select the tab playing your video and make sure "Share tab audio" or "Share audio" is ticked. That's how LiveLingo hears the video.

Common questions

Does it work with headphones? +
Yes. LiveLingo captures audio from the browser tab itself, not from your microphone or speakers. It works the same whether you use headphones or not.
Does it work on Netflix? +
Yes. LiveLingo works on Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, Twitch, university portals, and any other site that plays video in Chrome.
How accurate are the subtitles? +
Very accurate for clear speech. Heavy background music or strong accents may reduce accuracy slightly, but it handles fast speech and natural conversation very well.
How much is free? +
Without an account you get 30 minutes per day, free. Create a free LiveLingo account and that doubles to 60 minutes per day. Your daily allowance resets every night at midnight.
Does LiveLingo store what I'm watching? +
No. Audio is processed in real time and never stored anywhere. We don't record what you watch, what is said, or any audio from your device.
Why do I need to refresh the page after installing? +
When you first install LiveLingo, it needs to load into any browser tabs that were already open. Refreshing the tab once lets it load in. After that you never need to do it again for that site.
Is the access key really free? +
Yes. The key gives you access to a free tier that is more than enough for everyday use. No credit card is required to create an account or generate a key.
